What is the relationship between NMEA 2000, CAN Bus, CANopen, and DeviceNet ?

NMEA2000 Devicenet Cable

NMEA 2000 builds on CAN Bus, adopts DeviceNet hardware, and differs from CANopen by offering standardized marine-specific communication.

What is the relationship between NMEA 2000, CAN Bus, CANopen, and DeviceNet ?

NMEA 2000 is a communication protocol specifically designed for marine electronics. It is  based on  the  CAN Bus data transmission method.

CAN Bus,Controller Area Network, defines how data is sent and received between devices using a robust, multi-master protocol originally developed for automotive systems. NMEA 2000 uses the extended 29-bit CAN format and a fixed speed of 250 kbps.

DeviceNet  is an industrial CAN-based protocol that defines physical and electrical standards like cable structure, M12 connectors, and network power. NMEA 2000 directly adopts DeviceNet’s physical layer, including the 5-pin M12 A-coded Micro-Change connectors and trunk drop topology.

CANopen is another high-level protocol built on CAN Bus, used mainly in industrial automation. While both CANopen and NMEA 2000 use CAN as a foundation, NMEA 2000 is more specialized and standardized for marine applications.
