When standard D-Sub connectors take up too much space, Micro-D offers a more compact alternative. The Molex 83421 Series combines 9-circuit Micro-D interfaces with D-Sub, Pigtail, or Micro-D connections for different equipment layouts. But which configuration fits your application, and what should you check before choosing a compatible cable? This guide breaks down the 83421 Series and its four main cable configurations.

1. What Is the Molex 83421 Series Cable?
The Molex 83421 Series is a family of pre-assembled cable assemblies using 9-position Commercial Micro-D connectors. With a 1.27 mm pitch and two-row, 9-circuit layout, the Micro-D interface provides compact signal connectivity for space-constrained equipment.
Compared with standard D-Sub 9-pin connectors, Micro-D offers a smaller footprint and higher connector density. The 83421 Series uses 28 AWG conductors and is available in configurations featuring PVC cable, overmolded construction, and crimp or compression termination.
Micro-D is not simply a smaller DB9. Its mechanical dimensions, contact pitch, and mating interface are different, making the 83421 Series suitable for applications requiring compact connectivity and flexible termination options.

3. Micro-D vs. D-Sub 9-Pin Connectors
Micro-D and conventional D-Sub 9-pin connectors can both be used for multi-circuit signal connections, but their mechanical designs are different.
The main advantage of Micro-D is its compact connector size and 1.27 mm mating pitch. This allows the connector to occupy less space in equipment where PCB area, enclosure size, or internal cable routing space is limited.
The D-Sub 9-pin connector, on the other hand, has a long history of use in serial communication, industrial control, computer interfaces, and test equipment. A Micro-D-to-D-Sub cable assembly provides a practical interface between compact equipment and systems that continue to use conventional D-Sub connectors.
For equipment manufacturers, this mixed-interface cable architecture allows a compact Micro-D connector to be used inside a space-constrained system while maintaining compatibility with external or legacy equipment equipped with D-Sub interfaces.
