What's the difference and relationship between NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 ?
1. Technical Architecture
NMEA 0183 is a serial point-to-point protocol (RS-422 or TTL), typically allowing only one talker and one or multiple listeners. It's slow (4,800–38,400 bps).
NMEA 2000 is a multi-device network protocol based on CAN bus , allowing multiple devices to communicate simultaneously at 250 kbps with high stability.

2. Wiring Structure
NMEA 0183 requires dedicated wiring between each pair of devices.
NMEA 2000 uses a trunk and drop (backbone) layout, where all devices connect to a shared network via T-connectors, making installation cleaner and devices hot-swappable.
3. Data Format
NMEA 0183 uses ASCII text strings with one sentence per data type.
NMEA 2000 uses binary PGNs, allowing compact, efficient transmission of multiple data fields per message.

4. Device Compatibility and Modern Use
NMEA 0183 is an older standard; many modern devices no longer support it.
NMEA 2000 is newer, supports plug-and-play, automatic address claiming, and bi-directional communication.
5. Relationship
Both are created by NMEA National Marine Electronics Association .
NMEA 2000 is the successor and modern replacement for NMEA 0183.
The two are not directly compatible , but data conversion is possible using specialized gateways .
