In DMX512, the main difference between 3-pin XLR and 5-pin XLR connectors lies in the number of pins and their specific use, but both connectors can transmit DMX512 signals. Here are the key differences :

1. Number of Pins :
3-pin XLR : Has 3 pins, commonly used for DMX512 signal transmission.
5-pin XLR : Has 5 pins, a more extended version of the XLR connector, used in some DMX systems.
2. Pin Configuration and Signal Mapping :
3-pin XLR :
Pin 1 : Ground (Shield)
Pin 2 : DMX Data (Negative)
Pin 3 : DMX Data (Positive)
Pin 4 and Pin 5 : These pins are unused in standard DMX512 3-pin configurations but may be reserved for other purposes in certain systems
5-pin XLR :
Pin 1 : Ground (Shield)
Pin 2 : DMX Data (Negative)
Pin 3 : DMX Data (Positive)
Pin 4 : Common (optional, can be used for additional signals)
Pin 5 : Used for additional DMX channels or for other purposes in certain extended DMX systems
DMX512 can work with either a 3-pin or 5-pin XLR connector. However, 5-pin XLR is often used in more complex systems to carry extra data, such as backup DMX signals or control for additional features
