RS232, RS485, RS422 and TTL are several different serial communication protocols. They have significant correlations and differences in data transmission methods, signal levels, applicable scenarios, etc.

1. RS232

Definition:

Standard: EIA/TIA-232

Signal level: Typically ±3V to ±15V.

Interface: Usually uses DB9 or DB25 connector.

Features:

Signal level: Typically ±3V to ±15V.

Single-ended signal: Using a single signal line and ground wire, signal transmission is relatively unstable and susceptible to interference.

Distance and rate: The transmission distance is short, usually within 15 meters (50 feet), and the data transmission rate is low (up to 115200bps).

Application scenarios:

Computers and peripherals: such as modems, printers.

Industrial Equipment: For older industrial equipment and control systems.

2. RS485

Definition:

Standard: EIA/TIA-485

Interface: Usually using terminal block or RJ45 interface.

Signal level: differential signal, the level difference is 1.5V to 5V.

Features:

Differential signal: Use a pair of signal lines (A and B), which has strong anti-interference ability and long-distance transmission capability.

Multipoint communication: supports multiple devices to communicate on the same bus (up to 32 devices), suitable for half-duplex or full-duplex communication.

Distance and rate: Can support long-distance transmission (up to 1200 meters) and high data transmission rate (up to 10Mbps).

Application scenarios:

Industrial Automation: Used for device connection in industrial control systems.

Remote monitoring: used for applications requiring remote data collection and monitoring.

3. RS422

Definition:

Standard: EIA/TIA-422

Interface: usually use terminal blocks or DB9, DB25 interface.

Signal level: differential signal, the level difference is 2V to 6V.

Features :

Differential signal: similar to RS485, but usually used for point-to-point full-duplex communication, with good anti-interference ability and high-speed transmission performance.

Full-duplex communication: supports sending and receiving data simultaneously.

Distance and rate: Can support long-distance transmission (up to 1200 meters) and high data transmission rate (up to 10Mbps).

Application scenarios :

High-speed data transmission: Suitable for scenarios that require high-speed data transmission, such as measuring instruments and data acquisition systems.

Point-to-point connection: For high-speed, reliable communication between two devices.

4. TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic)

Definition:

Standard: There is no unified standard, usually 0V (low level) and 3.3V or 5V (high level).

Interface: Commonly used terminal blocks or DuPont wire.

Features:

Logic level signal: used in digital circuits, the signal level is logic level (0V and 3.3V/5V).

Short-distance communication: suitable for short-distance, high-speed data transmission.

Direct connection: Typically used for communication between a microcontroller and an embedded system.

Application scenarios:

Embedded system development: communicating with development boards (such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi).

Device Debugging and Testing: For direct connection to digital circuits and debugging tools.

Connections and Differences

Related:

RS232, RS485, RS422: These three protocols are all based on serial communication and realize data exchange between devices through different levels and transmission methods.

RS485 and RS422: Both use differential signals to provide strong anti-interference ability and long transmission distance.

RS232 and RS485/RS422: Both are used for serial communication, but RS232 uses single-ended signals and is suitable for short-distance communication; RS485 and RS422 are suitable for long-distance and multi-point communication.

Difference:

Signal level: RS232 uses single-ended signals with a larger level range; RS485 and RS422 use differential signals with smaller level ranges and stronger anti-interference capabilities; TTL uses logic levels with the smallest level range.

Communication method: RS232 is point-to-point communication, RS485 supports multi-point communication, RS422 supports point-to-point full-duplex communication, and TTL is mainly used for direct digital circuit communication.

Transmission distance and rate: RS232 is suitable for short-distance, low-speed communication; RS485 and RS422 are suitable for long-distance, high-speed communication; TTL is suitable for short-distance, high-speed communication.
