In the NMEA 2000 network, termination resistors are installed at both ends of the trunk line and drop line to ensure signal integrity and stability. The NMEA 2000 protocol is based on the CAN bus and supports efficient data exchange and communication to ensure the coordinated operation of ship electronic equipment.
In NMEA 2000 networks, the application of Terminating Resisto on trunk lines and drop lines is crucial to ensure the correct operation of the network and signal integrity.
Application of terminal resistor
1. Trunk Line
Specifications: Typically 120 Ω resistor per NMEA 2000 standard.

Location: Terminating resistors are usually installed at both ends of the trunk line, that is, at the start and end points of the network.
Function: In the NMEA 2000 network, the trunk line is the main communication path of the network. The function of the terminal resistor is to reduce signal reflection and prevent signal interference, thereby ensuring the clarity and stability of the signal.

2. Drop Line
Location: A drop line is a cable that branches off from the trunk line and is connected to a specific device. There is usually no need to install a terminating resistor at the end of the branch line.

Function: The cable length and impedance of branch lines must comply with standards to avoid signal attenuation and reflection. The terminating resistor should not be installed at the end of the drop line to avoid interfering with the main line signal.

Communication protocol
1. NMEA 2000 Agreement
Standard: NMEA 2000 is a communication standard based on CAN (Controller Area Network) bus protocol, specially designed for marine electronic equipment.

Protocol: Use the data link layer and physical layer of the CAN protocol to ensure that data exchange between devices is reliable and real-time.
Data format: Communication data is transmitted through messages. Each message contains identifier and data fields, supporting many different types of messages, such as sensor data, status updates, etc.

2. Bus topology
Network structure: The NMEA 2000 network adopts a bus topology, in which the trunk line serves as the backbone and connects multiple drop lines.
Communication: The devices exchange data through the trunk line. Each device on the network has a unique address and transmits data through the CAN protocol.

3. Electrical characteristics
Impedance: The entire NMEA 2000 network requires a cable impedance of 120 Ω to match the specification of the termination resistors.
Signal Integrity: Termination resistors help maintain signal integrity and prevent data loss or bit errors.
