DisplayPort Alternate Mode DP Alt Mode is an optional operating mode defined for the USB Type-C interface that allows the transmission of DisplayPort audio/video signals over a USB-C connection.
It is standardized by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) as part of the DisplayPort over USB-C specification.

1. Definition
DP Alt Mode enables a USB-C port to repurpose its high-speed data lanes to carry native DisplayPort signals instead of USB data.
In this mode, a USB-C connector can function as a video output interface, eliminating the need for a dedicated DisplayPort or HDMI port.

2. How It Works
A USB Type-C connector typically includes up to four high-speed differential lanes.
In DP Alt Mode :
- USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) can still operate simultaneously for charging
- A dedicated AUX channel is used for DisplayPort control and link management
- Some or all of these lanes are reconfigured to carry DisplayPort Main Link data
- Remaining lanes may still carry USB 3.x data or be disabled depending on configuration
This multiplexing allows a single USB-C cable to support video, data, and power delivery.

3. Supported Video Capabilities
The actual display performance depends on:
- GPU / SoC capability
- Cable quality and signal integrity
- DisplayPort version (1.2, 1.4, or 2.0)
- Number of active lanes (2-lane or 4-lane mode)
Typical supported outputs include:
- 1080p @ 60Hz to 240Hz
- 1440p @ 60Hz to 240Hz
- 4K @ 60Hz (common for DP 1.2 / 1.4)
- Up to 8K @ 60Hz (DP 2.0 / USB4 systems)
- 4K @ 120Hz (with DP 1.4 + DSC compression)

4. Compatibility Requirements
For DP Alt Mode to function, both ends must support it:
- USB-C port must expose DisplayPort-capable high-speed lanes
- Display or adapter must accept DisplayPort input (or convert to HDMI/DVI)
- Host device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, GPU) must support DP Alt Mode output
If any of these components lack support, video output will not work, even if USB-C is present.

5. Interoperability with USB Data
DP Alt Mode maintains the physical integrity of the USB-C connector while reconfiguring signal lane assignments at the PHY (Physical Layer):
- USB 3.x data and DisplayPort signals share the high-speed differential pairs within the cable.
- In specific configurations, USB 3.x data rates may be throttled or entirely disabled to prioritize video bandwidth (e.g., in a full 4-lane DP output configuration).

6. Relationship with Thunderbolt and USB4
- Thunderbolt 3/4: Features native encapsulation of DisplayPort signals (DP over Thunderbolt tunneling).
- USB4: A converged architecture capable of simultaneously tunneling USB, PCIe, and DisplayPort traffic.
- DP Alt Mode: Operates as the foundational "Direct Mapping" method for routing DP signals over the USB-C physical interface.
The Hierarchy:
DP Alt Mode serves as the baseline implementation for USB-C video delivery, whereas USB4 and Thunderbolt represent advanced, high-level integrated architectures.

7. Colusion
DisplayPort Alternate Mode is a protocol extension mechanism for USB-C. It enables the USB Type-C interface to output high-resolution video signals directly, eliminating the requirement for dedicated legacy physical ports such as HDMI or standalone DisplayPort.
