| Description | PROFIBUS supports two types of devices: master devices and slave devices. The former is called the active station and the latter is called the passive station. When the master device has bus access rights, it has the right to control the bus. In this way, it can control the bus when it is not needed Transmit messages in case of any remote request. Examples of slave devices are transmitters, sensors and actuators etc. Slave devices acknowledge any message received and on receipt of a request from a master device, can send a message to that master device . The PROFIBUS standard family includes: PROFIBUS DP (master/slave), PROFIBUS FMS (multi-master/point-to-point), PROFIBUS PA (explosion-proof). DP, FMS and PA respectively represent Decentralized Pheriphery, Fieldbus Message Specification, and Process Automation. PROFIBUS DP handles fast communication processes such as drives, remote input/output (I/O), and is commonly used in factory automation. In this mode, when using multi-master stations, a slave station can only be assigned to one master station. In this case, multiple hosts can read input from a particular device, but only one host can write output to that device. |
